Cutting the Cable/Satellite cord

Cord Cutting

So, I have joined the 10’s of thousands of people who have cut the cable/satellite cord. We decided that we didn’t watch enough TV to spend almost $100 a month on service. I would guess around 98% of what we watch is online through services like HuluNetflix, and iTunes.

This year I am going to use the savings to watch MLB online. It also gives me a good excuse to check out various content devices like new GoogleTV boxes, or Roku boxes, or Boxee.

My current set up consists of:

  • LG 47lw6500 3D Smart TV
    • Netflix
    • Hulu Plus
    • YouTube
    • Amazon Instant Video
    • MLB.tv
    • NHL
    • Viewster
    • vTuner
    • Vudu
    • CinemaNow
    • XOS College Sports
  • XBox 360 slim
    • ESPN3
    • Hulu Plus
    • Netflix
    • Zune Video
    • Last.fm
    • Verison FiOS
    • MLB.tv
    • CinemaNow
    • Vudu
  • PS3 slim
    • Amazon Instant Video
    • Vudu
    • Hulu Plus
    • Netflix
    • MLB.tv
    • NHL
    • CinemaNow
    • SEC Digital Network
    • XOS College Sports
    • Video Unlimited
  • AppleTV 2nd gen
    • Netflix
    • YouTube
    • MLB.tv
    • NHL
    • NBA
    • Vimeo
    • iTunes Movie/TV store
  • Logitech Revue
    • Hulu Plus
    • Netflix
    • YouTube
    • XOS College Sports
    • Amazon Instant Video
    • NBA

I know there is a lot of overlapping services, but some of these devices do a better job than others with the different services. I find myself switching between them from time to time. I have to say I am pretty disappointed with Google TV on the whole. It is missing tons of apps, it doesn’t pass through 3D signal, and this giant keyboard remote feels clunky. They had dreams of ruining Apple’s first gen Apple TV, but they have a way to go before they can catch up on the 2nd or even the 3rd gen Apple TV.

All in all its looking very promising to me. The shows I do watch I can get access to pretty easily. I was already paying for hulu plus and netflix (used them as backup when storms hit and our satellite signal went away), so it becomes a straight savings of around $96 a month for dropping the service. Are you going to be cutting the cord this year? Sound out in the comments.
